The Status of Ibogaine’s Legality in the United States

If you’ve become familiar with ibogaine and its effects, you may be looking for ibogaine for opiate addiction or ibogaine as one of many alternative therapies for depression. Much has been made of ibogaine’s documented effectiveness in blocking the neurochemicals that cause cravings and withdrawal symptoms such as depression and irritability. Despite ibogaine’s usefulness in a medical context, it has been illegal in the United States for a long time because of its status as a psychedelic drug. However, there have been some recent developments that may be the first steps toward legalization in the United States.

In September 2022, the city of San Francisco decriminalized plant-derived psychedelic drugs such as ibogaine, which is derived from the bark of a West African plant. While this did not make it legal to manufacture and purchase ibogaine, it did begin to destigmatize psychedelics on a legal level.

The state of Colorado is also pursuing measures (Proposition 122) to decriminalize ibogaine and create regulated facilities where adults 21 and older can take ibogaine or purchase it under strict supervision. And while ibogaine has not been explicitly decriminalized in Oregon, another plant-derived psychedelic drug, psilobycin, has been legalized. These could be the first steps toward more widespread acceptance of ibogaine as a treatment for addiction and depression.

Despite the push for ibogaine’s legalization, most patients interested in ibogaine treatments will need to travel abroad to seek treatment, such as looking for an ibogaine treatment center in Mexico. Beond Ibogaine is one of the best ibogaine clinics where patients can get high-quality ibogaine treatments supervised by trained medical professionals. Be sure to find an ibogaine clinic staffed by knowledgeable, qualified medical experts before undergoing treatment.
