Protein Supplements Maximize Body Building Efforts

Protein plays a major role in the body; it helps grow, repair, and replace tissue.  According to many nutritionists, however, the average person in the U.S. and Canada gets enough protein through their diet. Some people even say that the average American diet provides more than protein for athletes in training even. So if most people are getting enough protein through their diets, why do so many people feel compelled to take protein supplements?

According to popular magazines and health food stores, taking the right protein supplements at the right times can help body builders and athletes accomplish their goals faster. There are many different types of protein supplements on the market, including whey protein, a waste product of cheese manufacturing, casein, soy, and egg.  The claims of these supplements depend on the type of protein and the brand.

For example, whey protein taken before and after workouts has been shown to kick-start muscle growth. Why has also been touted to provide better power. Casein, another type of protein, has been shown to not only help refuel recovering muscles, but also aids in delaying digestion and absorption.

It’s important to consult your doctor or nutritionist before taking protein supplements. Excess protein can place a burden on the kidneys and the body might store it as fat.
